Mission Statement
Horse Sense & Sensitivity provides facilities and support for physical therapy on horseback and therapeutic horseback riding for persons with special needs and disabilities. Through the use of horses, individuals are given opportunities to increase physical abilities and cognitive skills.
What is Horse Sense & Sensitivity?
Horse Sense & Sensitivity is a non-profit agency providing facilities and support for hippotherapy and therapeutic horseback riding for persons with disabilities. It is operated totally with volunteers who care for the horses, maintain facilities, and assist during the physical therapy and therapeutic riding sessions. The use of the land is an in-kind contribution from the Boys Home Association. The expenses of the program are covered by individual and organization donations. Horse Sense & Sensitivity was incorporated and received 501(c)3 status in 2005.
What is Hippotherapy?
Hippotherapy is a form of physical, occupational and speech therapy in which a therapist uses the characteristic movements of a horse to provide carefully graded sensory input. A foundation is established to improve neurological function and sensory processing, which can be generalized to a wide range of daily activities. Unlike in therapeutic horseback riding, where specific riding skills are taught, in hippotherapy the movement of the horse is a means to a treatment goal.
